The story behind "Der Weisse Rausch"
Der Weisse Rausch ("The White Ecstasy") takes its name from the legendary ski film directed by Arnold Fanck in the 1930s. The film is based on the earlier production A Fox Hunt on Skis Through the Engadin (1922) and follows an exciting ski chase in which the famous Arlberg ski pioneer Hannes Schneider takes on the role of the fox, accompanied by Leni Riefenstahl.
Renowned ski champions Walter Riml and Guzzi Lantschner portray the two humorous Hamburg carpenters, Fietje and Tetje, who encounter skis for the very first time and eagerly decide to try this "new-fangled invention." The characters Fietje and Tetje originated from the popular performances of the Hamburg variety artists, the Wolf Brothers.
The film became a remarkable success, captivating audiences not only in Austria but around the world, and remains an important milestone in the history of alpine skiing and mountain cinema.
